Woke up and couldnt breath?

ok, so ive had a cold for about 2 days now and this morning i woke up and only could take very short rapid breaths, and if it wasnt for me knowing i had to remain calm i probably would have ran out of air. I took mucinex Dm and Nyquil just before i went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night not able to breath. It felt like my lungs were sligtly collapsed or filled with mucus. Is this a rare event or should i have it cheaked out?
