Why do the older generation hark back to the good old days when you could leave your door unlocked?

at night, or the local bobby would give you a clip around the ear for scrumping apples? When only the seriously deranged ever left their door unlocked at night and most coppers acted like they were above the law and would kick you senseless at the drop of a hat, is it wishful thinking or dementia?
